This is FYI. It doesn't answer your question, but can keep you from  
being misled. (It came up before in discussions about starting water  
pumps.)

"Locked rotor amp" rating is not the critical factor in starting. It  
represents the most amps the motor will draw in the instant of  
starting IF it's given full voltage (no sag) at the motor terminals.  
That's not likely to actually happen even on grid.

So, it does NOT mean it REQUIRES that much current to start. To  
assume so has led some engineers to specify much larger inverters  
than are actually required.

What does it mean? High LRA (relative to inverter surge capacity) can  
give you an indication that voltage will sag significantly during  
startup, dimming lights, etc. But we all know that some sag is  
tolerable.

You are right to put your problem out for questioning from the field,  
because there is no sure way to calculate an answer from printed  
specs. Just keep a wide safety margin in your judgement since  
batteries at low voltage and weak with age, plus other loads of  
course, will make it less likely to start.
