I sure like the Mate 2 as to appearance and
durability, as I have had problems to the Mate in odd
mounting places.

For Mounting the three Mate 2's on my 12 inverter
system (and a couple of other systems) I made a 28
gauge sheet metal box, 2" deep (I think) and mounted
with sheet metal screws through the cornors.  I also
used locally attained cables that did not have the
fancy Outback strain relief to allow a sharper bend. 
The metal boxes were surface mounted.   I would think
a simple flat plate that would cover a hole and accept
the Mate 2 would also work.
