Jay,
Worldwide annual value of energy markets is approx. USD $3 t-t-t-t-trillion,
can't remember where I got this information and unsure of definition of the
value, but believe it is factual. If USA consumes 25% of all resources
planet-wide, we could do some basic math and arrive at a number. I believe
the number for Iraq War will be $500 b-b-b-b-b-billion by years end.

Further, 52% of all US energy production, and perhaps by extension, the
world's energy production, is LOST in transmission and distribution. That's
a lot of pointless CO2 tonnages. Also, this is why distributed generation
concept will win out over everything else once advanced energy storage
devices come online.

As far as the war in Iraq is concerned, if you want to really get depressed
about it, see "Turtles Can Fly," a joint Iraq/Iran film production,
available at Blockbuster and the like.

Not sure if this is subject for this list, so put to both lists again. But
must tell you that our own fed gov't has charged Marines at our Camp
Pendleton here in Oceanside, with Murder. Of course, this is the talk of
our town and has been and will continue to make headlines here. This could
have been spun either way and the Feds are making "examples" of these fine
young men for the press. Please remember before you judge, the same men
have seen their buddies' and Iraqi civilian adults' and children's bodies
blown to bits on several occasions, by mines, IED's, and many a mujahdin's
bullets.

The Marines' (and one Navy sailor's) actions may very well be inexcusable,
but certainly war-time stress, and every war-related mental disorder out
there, has not been taken into account, nor has misunderstanding of orders
and misinterpretation of information these soldiers were acting on been
taken into account. Political correctness and politicization of this case
specifically, are in full force however. As one of the mothers of these
"boys" has stated, "It's tough to be locked up, when you are innocent."
There is so much irony here it hurts my brain to think about it. Death
penalty (a stated possibility) for soldiers charged with murder during
wartime? What about their commander? His commander? And the Commander in
Chief?

Talking about putting money in the wrong places, another headline reads that
the "Big One likely this century." Jay's got the right idea below. Can
you imagine the enormous benefit of not having distributed generation of
power effected by a major earthquake? More appropriately, can you imagine a
California without power due to disrupted transmission/distribution? Or
how about San Onofre Nuclear plant polluting everything South and East of
it's coastal location? Oops, the glass on my PV modules fractured like a
windshield, but hey! the system still works and the batteries stayed
upright. Imagine that.

We all know the success of Renewable Energy is directly related to the
success of this country's national security programs and policies and stable
economic policy in general.

Sorry, don't mean to bring anyone down. Keep fighting the good fight. And
keep talking up the good fight, no matter who hears it. This will flush out
the real enemies of human advancement much quicker.

Love you all.

Subject: US energy consumption [RE-wrenches]

HI All,

I'm sure one of you guys knows where I can find the following.

1. US electrical consumption
2. total US energy consumption.

I'm trying to figure out how far the $ spent on the war in Iraq would
go towards producing energy.

Just heard a talk where total could be 2+ trillion dollars

thanks,

jay
