In 1995, Solec provided Kevin Costner's brother, Dan, 16 each 80-watt
modules to spin his flywheel storage system at US Flywheel Sytems, Newbury
Park, CA. The flywheel storage worked but cost 10X/kWh more than lead-acid
batteries and required a thick concrete protective enclosure in case the
composite flywheel spinning at 14,000 rpm shattered. The same year Kevin
Costner starred in Waterworld.

Wrenches,

Does anyone have any experience or information / recommendations for a
small flywheel that could be used to provide 3-5 days of power in a
residential off grid situation? I have done just a little bit of
research and it appears that flywheels are used more prevalently in
situations involving large power demands in a short period of time.

I am looking for an alternate to conventional battery storage for off
grid PV.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
