358.12 Uses Not Permitted
EMT shall not be used under the following conditions:
(1) Where, during installation or afterward, it will be subject to severe
physical damage

It certainly does depend upon the jurisdiction.  EMT is fine for roof
applications in Colorado, at least anywhere I've attempted to use it.

An inspector in Boulder recently told me that the building code for conduit
above a roof was 4".  He said I could get away with 2".   I made standoffs
from 2" Unistrut.  If I had to go 4", I would have stacked 2 short pieces of
Unistrut, fastened together with spring nuts.

I avoid PVC on roofs as much as possible.  It bleaches out in the sun and
looks horrible in a couple of years. I don't know how its strength is
effected.
