yes very much so.  As the string gets older it will draw more current 
to keep all its cells in a good state of charge.  If you put them in 
series with new cells then the string will not be equalised without a 
lot of overcharging of the new ones.

You want all the cells in one string to be identical if possible but 
it does not matter so much if a different string has different cells 
because it will draw a different current.
