Hi Conrad. As others have noted the Aquastar 125BS is the old established
standard for tankless backup water heating. They've been around for 15 years
plus with this model. You can set the output temp (approximately) with a big
knob on the front of the unit. Range is about 90 to 140 F. This model is
only available with a standing pilot light.
The other shortcoming is that it only senses temp on the output, so it
can't react until the outbound water temp has already changed. Depending on
the particular plumbing, this can make for exciting gullies and spikes if
other folks turn the hot water on or off while someone is showering. The
Aquastar uses NO electricity however. Controlled Energy Corp. is the North
American importer.

The next step up are the Takagi tankless heaters. These are a more modern
electronic ignition design from Japan (no pilot light), and of course they
use electricity. Only a watt or two on standby, but 100 watts for the
powered exhaust fan when running.
Takagi's sense temperature both incoming and outgoing, so they're a lot
steadier about output temp. You can't adjust output temp unless you get the
optional $195 remote control. (There's a series of internal dip switches
that's used without the remote.) They make a Junior model with about the
same output as the Aquastar 125, or a couple of really honkin' models up
around 175,000 Btu's and up. If you HAVE to support multiple showers
simultaneously, these are your only answer. Low Energy Systems is the North
American importer.

Cheers,
Doug Pratt

Hi All,
A while back there was discussion over which tankless hot water
heaters(gas) were compatible with solar preheat. I notice the Bosch
GWH425--- manual says not to use preheated water becuase it will cause an
overheat cutout. Anybody have models that have worked well for them?
thanks,
Conrad Geyser
