Hey David,
A year ago I'd have said, "Don't Do It!" to the Whispers. These are
lightweight, high-speed, (low-cost) turbines and they won't survive a highly
exposed ridge top. But they've both had a complete overhaul and
re-engineering within the past year, and all the usual problems have been
addressed. Does that make them better? Maybe, maybe not. Nobody knows yet.
Given your ridge top site, I'd lean toward the 100. It's got a small blade
on a fairly large generator. It's specifically built for higher speed wind
sites. You'll give up some daily power output, but gain survivability when
things get nasty.
If you want to never worry about survival, get a Proven. They've got some
great looking monopole mounts too! ...all for a price.
http://www.solarwindworks.com/ ...no affiliation, etc., just great
engineering.
Sorry, I know nothing about the IDC tower.
Cheers,
Doug Pratt

Subject: 30 foot freestanding wind tower [RE-wrenches]
Wrenches,
We have a client that is located on a narrow ridge top that does not
allow a guyed tower. It only needs to be 30'-40' tall. For wind
generator service we are willing to tilt it or climb it. Tilting is
preferred. We are considering the IDC 30 foot tilting pole tower.
Anyone have experience with these? Any other suggestions? Wind gust
speeds could probably exceed 100 mph since you can see for a LONG way
from this location and we're about 10 miles from the pacific coast
north of SF, CA. There is already PV on the project and it is 48 v on
the DC side of the inverters. We're considering a Whisper 100 or 200
(H40 or H80) primarily to augment winter charging.
Thanks in advance for your thoughtful comments,
David Henry
