Allan and Darryl,

Not sure if it matters in your situation, Darryl, but if you're considering
a chip upgrade in your customer's SW, or if the inverter has software Rev
4.01, upgrade to Rev 4.10. Rev 4.01 has a bug in the generator exercise
routine. You can set up the exercise interval in the menu, but the inverter
never initiates an exercise sequence. I know this is a problem for 2-wire
start systems, so it may also be a problem with 3-wire start systems. I
never saw a reference to this problem in Trace literature, nor does the 4.10
software upgrade instructions or associated documentation mention the
problem or that Rev 4.10 fixes it. Trace/Xantrex tech support told me of
this flaw and fix during a troubleshooting phone call a couple of years
back. Might there also be a software bug with 3-wire starting? By the way,
Xantrex provided the complete 4.10 upgrade chip sets (for several individual
and stacked pairs of inverters) at no charge, based on it being a
manufacturing defect on their part. That was three years ago.

Darryl,
That information is in the SW4024 manual. Pretty much all of the parameters
for 3-wire (Onan-style or Honda-style) are programmable. The manual is
available at http://www.xantrex.com/support/web/prod/176/docdisplay.asp. If
you prefer the older version 2 of the manual, try
http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/307/docserve.asp. Both work with Rev. 4.01
firmware. See the section on "Generator starting details".

If you have the earliest version of the SW firmware, use manual
http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/315/docserve.asp, but you might want to
upgrade the chipset to 4.01.

I would like to ask a related question, how does the
old SW do generator start? Relay 7 is the run
contacts and relay 8 is the crank contacts. ( I
think) How does the SW stop cranking when the
generator starts?

My repair customer has system with no diagrams done by
a now disappeared solar installer on a stand alone
system.

When the generator is set for auto and the batteries
get low, the generator cranks and starts. The starter
stay engaged for a while after the gen starts. Then
while running for a few minutes perhaps one minute the
starter tries to restart the running engine?
