Marco is correct - I think you have it reversed in your email.
A GFDI protected array IS grounded except during after a ground fault
when it must be ungrounded by Code.
(Because we all know ungrounded PV is safer anyway so when we have a
problem we unground it).

not grounded except when intentionally testing (tripping) the
ground-fault device.

During normal operation, i.e., a no-ground-fault-present mode, the PV
array(s) are grounded. That is, the negative conductor is connected to
ground, right? Or am I not understanding you properly, Joel?
