Nick,
Glad to hear the good word about our LCBs. They are indeed made by Frank at
BZ Products, who private labelled them for us under the Dankoff name. We've
had great success with them, considering the large number we've sold.
This spring Frank upgraded the products, and the new versions are
distinguished (visually, at least) by a B letter code (as in, DL-8B), as
well as having larger, more rugged terminals.
The failed overflow switch in your experience is most likely caused by
lightning induced surges taking out the float circuit. Make sure you use
shielded, twisted pair floatswitch cable, and tie the shielding to your
grounding system. The new B versions have a much improved surge protection,
but still nothing is as good as a good ground.
If the pump only works in overflow mode, (especially if the flow is much
less than you expect) double check the dip switch settings against the array
configuration and motor voltage. It's really easy to get them in the wrong
place, and will cause what you describe.

We've been using the Dankoff (Conergy ) DL-8A controllers for years
and most have been trouble free for the most part. Not sure if the
guts are still made by BZ but all the units I witnessed problems with
did utilize internal BZ components. I say for the most part because
it does seem that I've had to either replace units or live with the
units little quirks. Mostly the three position switch not operating
as designed so that the user would have to fall back to overflow mode
or, with my personal unit, float position is the only way the unit
will operate. Almost every time at least one of the switch positions
would still allow the pump to operate. Many squeaked and made noises
as well but I don't really see that as an issue other than having to
reassure the customer that it's operating as designed. In any case
Dankoff was always on the ball with replacements and it blows away
the old Solarjack units that were priced nearly twice as much and
half as dependable. I've always had an interest in BZ's controllers
myself but have a hard time beating the reliability of Morningstar
products, if only they made a small MPPT controller...
