Allan -

You can give certainly give it a try - but I suspect that one OutBack
inverter will not be able to start it. The difference between it
pumping into a pressure tank versus open discharge is pretty minor if
the pressure switch is set to turn on at a low pressure level.

I think you will end up needing a second inverter - I would be very
interested in hearing the results of your testing. I don't think that
Daryl's issue of soft starting with water bearings is too much of an
issue - we do what is best described as "reduced voltage starting" and
not a low frequency / speed ramp-up type start system.

One additional note on submersible well pumps - always insist on the
pump being a "three wire type" pump and not the "two wire" versions. A
three wire requires a separate starting / control box - but this allows
more options (such as adding a larger start capacitor and using the old
fashion relay type boxes). The two wire versions have the starting
controls built into the pump itself, making it a little cheaper and
faster to install - but it makes repair of the starting circuit
impossible - and I've also heard that they are more lightning sensitive
as well.

Its also common for the well drillers to recommend a larger pump than is
actually required - they seem to carry two sizes in their trucks - big
and really big. I often double checked with a local pump supply company
to see what they thought. A smaller pump might run longer - but it will
use less power overall in many situations.
