The best work is still the study done at New Mexico State University a few
decades ago. The Sandia document number is SAND85-0330 but it is not
available anywhere that I have found other than in personal libraries. I
just made a pdf of it (about 1.5MB) and would be happy to send it to anyone
who likes to read analysis papers (contact me offline).

Bottom line is that 3" from the bottom of the frame to the roof deck is the
minimum for cooling. When you get up around 6" things start looking strange
aethetically. 3" gap only runs 5C hotter than an open rack and 6" gap only
runs 2C hotter than an open rack. General recommendation based on this study
is 3-4" gap is the best compromise between cooling and aesthetics.

This report is still probably the best documented information on your
question.
