I've got a client with a project located in north central California and with decent southern exposure. Her architect (who lacks both the software and the experience to do overhang calculations) and her contractor are telling her that it's probably not worth increasing the window area on the south face because of increased nighttime heat losses. These are the same people who put a 7 foot overhang on the south windows.

Is there some simple formula to help sort this out, or at least a guideline that will show the effects of increasing window area with different U-values? The architect is donating his time to a nonprofit and the budget just isn't there to pay for a professional study, unless she can show them something to change their minds.
