I've been advising people lately to look at the Kohler Diesel Generators
now that the 6.5RMY units are history - they use 1800 RPM Yanmar engines
and come standard with two-wire start systems (which is all I think you
should consider for stand alone systems). A bit of a hassle to use
diesel - but most people like the option of being able to use biodiesel
and often have tractors or trucks running diesel as well.

They offer a 6.0, 10.0 and 15.0 kW which all can be reconfigured for 120
vac only output. All are offered with the old fashioned "standard"
control box and include an engine driven alternator. No fancy housings
however are available - so you'll need a shed or doghouse.

BTW - The Kohler website only lists a 6.0 kw air cooled 3600 LP unit and
then jumps to a 15 kW GM motor and then 18 kW Ford motor LP units - both
1800 RPM. The 15 kW has the new fancy digital controller but the 18 kW
has the older standard version.
