  The message I responded to was regarding a geared model, but yes; there is
a difference in that regard. But like you say, there are still plenty of
parts that require looking after, even on the "current" version.

  Then there's that one year warranty.

  We should make a distinction between the gear-driven Jakes (and WTIC
  copy) you are talking about and the direct-drive Jakes, which are
  significantly less complicated and maintenance intensive (but nowhere
  near simple...)
