Hello Mark,
Thanks for the feedback. 7% sounds about right for 4 months of urban dust
and dirt. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) use to give brass
hose nozzles to its residential PV Pioneers (people who volunteered their
roofs for a utility owned, customer sited 3 kW and 4 kW PV system). SMUD and
encourage them to squirt the array from the ground in the morning whenever
they felt it needed cleaning. SMUD probably got 5% more annual energy
production and the volunteers definitely felt they were participating in
making more green power.
Best regards,
Joel Davidson

Do clean PV arrays operate cooler and produce more power?

We did an experiment in a suburban area and found that on two consecutive
days with essentially the same weather (clear, no wind, 85F), a 4KW roof
mounted array produced 7% more power after washing it down with a garden
hose from a ladder. The modules had not been washed for 4 months. We
recommend washing every 3-6 months unless it has rained.
