Bill,
Thanks for the note. We did want more clearance on top, but didn't have
the
room, and felt that we were just within specs for that particular unit.
Having said that we're not planning on doing this again. Either we'll use
a
new M5 in a different location or we'll use Outback. We're leaning toward
Outback because it would fit so nicely, and the only other space we could
fit the even taller M5 would be on the other side of the wall, in an entry
alcove--a place my client isn't thrilled with sticking an inverter in. If
we
had a "free" M5 this might change our course, but I don't expect Beacon to
replace another company's product.
Another challenge is that this is a warm room, and is frequently in the
upper-70's to mid-80's. I've pushed for a couple years to get better
airflow
in this mechanical room, and now the push is turning into a shove.
We now know that the MM5000 had heating problems, as there have been other
such failures. Having it in a somewhat confined space and in a warm room
certainly exacerbated things. Marginal equipment plus marginal environment
equals problems!
My advice to those of you who have MM5000's out there is to keep them as
cool as possible, maybe even adding a small thermostat-driven fan to
circulate air around the unit.
Of course cooler is better, but what maximum continuous ambient
temperature
range do you think is reasonable for this equipment?
Oh, we did get a waiver from the inspector to place things above the
battery
storage projection.
Anyone have grid-tied Outback stories to share?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary,
I like your website and the information you provided. My only concern from
the picture is whether you have a cooling problem due to the confined
space.
Could this be a possible additional source of failure? Hard to tell from a
snapshot.
Bill.
