Wrenches,
I ran a 144v EV for about 7 years. It was my everyday driver. When all
the Y2K hysteria was going on I bought a high voltage Exeltech 1,100.
After all, I had 10kWh of storage sitting in the driveway. The highest
voltage Exeltech makes is "108 volt". It will just tolerate a 120v
battery pack so long as you aren't charging. So I simply left a few
batteries off my power tap for the inverter. It was only for emergency
use. Y2K never developed, but my funky local city electric utility gave
me plenty of opportunities to try it out. That hi-volt Exeltech was one
tough inverter! It would routinely run anything up to about 2,000 watts
without complaint, beyond that it started to brownout.
I enjoyed the manufacturer's recommendations for power input wiring.
We're used to 4/0, or 2/0 as standard. Exeltech says that with 14-gauge
input wire, 20-feet is the max.
It saved my bacon (literally!) one Thanksgiving when 2/3 of the city
power went out at 2pm, stayed off till 9pm, and I had a house full of
relatives. Even gas ovens don't cook without power for the glow bulb.
Ran the oven, the TV, the microwave, the furnace, the lights, the
fridge...no problem. It only balked at the lights, furnace, fridge, and
microwave all at once. I let it go with the EV when I sold it last
summer.
Cheers,
Doug Pratt
