Hi Hugh,
As you no doubt remember, the early Jacobs were commonly available in 120
volts. One problem with this configuration was the inherent danger in
maintaining a high voltage battery bank, especially for the average farmer.
I was working at one of these installations (about 22 years ago!) when I
witnessed just how much potential for disaster there is with high
voltage/unlimited amperage and short circuits. Let's just say that plasma
cutters don't have much up on a 5/8" spanner connecting the + and - poles of
a 3,000 amp hr. battery at 125 volts. Fortunately, besides a very impressive
fireworks display and a wrench with a missing middle section, the only
personal damage to the guy was a pretty bad burn on the palm of his hand.
I know that a 48 volt bank can be dangerous, but the potential for bodily
harm @ 120 + volts is so much greater.

This 144V thing sounds like a 120 volt nominal battery. If so then
you can go to Exceltech. I also recommend Power solutions Australia
for high power 120 VDC synch/sine inverters, although they maybe only
do 50 Hz.

120 VDC makes a lot of sense for high power systems and I wonder
why it is so rarely seen.
