I had a 3 watt ElCid in my SDHW system that made a ticking sound it's 
entire life of 10 years (still runs but not installed due to upgrade in 
collector size). I replaced every part that could be replaced and 
checked for anything that might be in there, it was totally clean, and 
no change. The sound was worse at slow speeds. My more recent El Cids, 6 
of them, make a whirring sound but no ticking. Now my float type check 
valves rattle a lot. After you've heard air in the fluid once, you can 
tell the difference between that and pump ticking.
