I would also like to see more code-compliance, and fewer "3rd world"
conditions, but I don't believe conformance the NEC or any other code
will totally *assure* safety; nor do sub-NEC conditions *necessarily*
guarantee a hazard. Illustrations:
We know what happened with aluminum wiring for branch circuits.
I've personally seen and replaced a few Zinsco 100A circuit breakers
which, when "heavily loaded" to a 50A blew up after a few minutes.
Federal pacific circuit breakers were stamped by UL and code kosher
for decades, yet the blatant product deficiencies (failure to trip on
overload, inadequate bus/breaker interface...) have caused many fires.
Ever notice that the service entrance wires from utility companies are
vastly smaller than the NEC-sized wires on the customer's wiring?
A 200A service may get AL #6 AWG drop from the utility, but use
CU 2/0 down the service mast.
Consider two 1.2kw electric heaters plugged into one #16 or #18
AWG lamp extension cord on a 20A circuit breaker.
And what happens to the chassis of most electric stoves and
dryers when there is any fault in the neutral connection?
I'll stop...
