Hi Todd,
I would bet that it's a hell of a lot more hassle to dig through a big (or
even small) array looking for a blown fuse than to pop the lid of an Outback
combiner box. We had a problem at one big off-grid site a year or so ago
with a bad module in a 48 volt string of 12 volt modules that was easily
identified and fixed because of a very nifty visibly tripped breaker on that
string. How sweet it is! So much better than the alternative.

Yes, but really, how often are series fuses /breakers needed? When you
think of
what is involved in wiring all the panel's outputs to a central
breaker/combining box and how rare a "nuisance blown fuse" failure is, I
think
it is a toss up on exactly what is more work.
