Kirk,

NRG's new building has 29 Sunnyboys (65kw)connected in a net
metered configuration along with a 50kw Kohler backup generator.

All the PV feeds to a meterpak on the grid side of the ATS (Automatic
Transfer Switch). The ATS has 3 connections; Grid, LOAD and
Generator. It is a double throw switch with the load as common. You
are either on Grid or on Generator. When the Grid fails, all the Load
switches to the Generator automatically as the generator fires up.
The PV is still tied to the Grid and since the grid is dead, all the
Sunnyboys shut down.

This arrangement also allows us a way to sell all the PV power to our
utility when it hits a summer peak on a hot summer day. We just take
our company off grid (run on the generator) and sell power at the
market rate.
