In the telecom world, the central (negative in our case) DC buss connects only to fuses and breakers through which every source/load passes.  Batteries are typically connected with a 600A or 800A pullout fuse on smaller systems and a Boltswitch type disconnect on the big ones, with each string individually fused and connected to the same central point.  Inverters are almost always fed with pullout fuses (sometimes big breakers) and the rest of the world (DC loads, PV, etc.) using aircraft style magnetic breakers.  This architecture facilitates working safely on any part of the system and accommodates almost all expansion/replacement activities without disrupting the 24x7 loads involved.

There's a ton of surplus and used telecom DC distro gear out there but I suppose I'd have to get lucky to have an inspector approve something built with it...
