Just found out how LADWP monitored the performance of PV systems
mentioned in the newspaper article.

Greetings Graham and all,

There is an interesting article in the January/February 2003 Home Energy
magazine, volume 20.1 which I just came across yesterday.

It details the findings of the CEC and a group call Regional Economic
Research Incorporated in a study they did of 19 grid-tied systems. The
systems range in size from 12KW to .9KW DC nominal rating. They
apparently ran data-loggers monitoring solar insolation, module
temperature and AC and DC power delivered from the systems. The systems
were both direct grid-tie and with battery back up and are scattered all
over from San Diego County up to Willits.

The article provides a lot of graphs and charts, but does not offer info
on inverter or module type nor size of battery.
