All,

Whether you work in California or not, the California government exerts a
lot of influence on the PV industry. In the absence of accurate production
data from PV module manufacturers, the California Energy Commission defined
module power output at PTC ratings as ~90% of STC for crystalline, ~88% for
polycrystalline and ~95% for amorphous. These ratings are now generally
accepted or at least acknowledged worldwide. The CEC also defined how
inverter output should be rated and is now in the process of re-defining
inverter ratings.

Now there is a serious push (read: likely to happen) by California
politicans, bureaucrats and home builders to require 10 year warranties for
PV system inverters. Yeah, we know warranties do not make better inverters
and only add to the cost and Japan and Germany are doing quite well without
it. The reason for this push is the building industry wants their butts
covered from inverter exposure.

It will be interesting to see how this issue plays out.

Happy Holidays!

Bob,

The CEC is completely revamping how the inverter efficiency numbers are
calculated. It is unlikely that the 96% number will stand after that
procedure is used. I have the data that was produced by ETL, but it does not
comply with the accuracy requirements of the new CEC method. It appears to
be a very efficient inverter, but it unlikely be significantly more
efficient than the competing inverters.

Efficiency alone is not a good reason to purchase an inverter. I believe
that PV Powered is committed to building good products for the PV industry,
and goodness knows that we need more U.S. manufacturers, but the current
experience with these inverters is too light to recommend widespread use.
Just think of the last time the PV industry went after an untried
inverter....

Bill.

Wrenches,

PV Powered's 96% efficiency claim has received 3rd party confirmation from
ETL! Congratulations to them!
