Hey Ray,

Yes for sure if you can avoid a splice device at all, that's the way to go.

Ive seen many more wire nuts with corrosion in them and a few where 
the plastic separated from the spring inside.

But with two folks reporting split-bolt failures - you do have my 
attention.  I just checked on some I did 5 years ago and they are as 
tight as the day we put them in.  No corrosion, (wet climate).

Any one else?

I simply poke my Fluke probe right through the tape and mastic.  The 
whole fills back up with a little massaging of the mastic.
