Supposedly a fix to eliminate the power draw of the RES controller is in
the
works at Kohler.

Greetings -- I've got a customer with an Onan Emerald, a generator that
was apparently designed to ride along on a big RV and get starter
battery charging from the engine alternator. He's had lots of problems
with it including head gasket, but we had fairly good results keeping
it's battery charged with a slightly larger array at the generator shed
(200 watts) charging that starter battery. But, that array also
transfers to the house system to complement the 1,200 watts there when
the starter battery is satisfied. The 200 watts is enough to keep the
gen-set happy during cloudy weather and is not wasted during sunny
periods by the transfer circuitry.

We used a voltage controlled relay to transfer the 200 watts of PV
mounted on the generator shed to the main (house) PV system when the
starter battery voltage was good. Transfers back to the starter battery
when voltage falls below 12.4ish. Initial problems with temperature
compensation.

BTW, you can use a 3P2T power relay to switch the array voltage between
12VDC (starter battery) and 24VDC (house). I haven't tried doing so
with 48 volt system -- it boggles the mind.
