Regarding the HC T105s, Trojan got the higher capacity by using hotter
acid--which directly correlates to shorter lifespan.
Sandia's famed L-16 test of some years ago basically determined that most
L16 manufacturer capacity claims were grossly overrated. The tester, who
lived off grid and was plagued by underperforming batteries at home,
basically found that the only way to get reasonable performance out of most
L16s was to charge them hard--bulk charge voltages closer to EQ than not.
Interestingly enough, he can release volumes of graphs and statistics, but
cannot mention any brand names.
In my house I've had a set of both cheapo Sam's Club Specials and Trojan
T105s. The Sam's Clubbers were 660 AH at 24v, and the Trojan's were 440 AH.
I got roughly the same performance and same life out of both, only the
Trojans used 4 fewer batteries. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending
upon who you ask) I upgraded the Trojans before their life was truly up when
I dumped my propane fridge. Hoorah solar chilled cervesa!
I replaced them with a set of S-530 high capacity L16-style Surrettes. In
this case, I went with the high-cap batteries because Surrette gets
additional capacity by adding two additional plates (17 vs 15, 127 pounds vs
117). I longed for a set of the industrial cell Surrettes, but I didn't win
the lottery, I only got a new job.
I'll work on getting some emperical third party data for you, Ray.
