If series fusing makes too much "spaghetti" in 12 volt systems, I think
that's Nature's way of saying move to 24 or 48 volt.

Actually, the Outback MX-60 should make the low voltage array obsolete,
even in 12 volt systems.  Outback and Blue Sky claim their CC pays for
themselves in home-run wire savings.  They should also mention that it
makes the array wiring simpler and code compliant arrays much easier to
obtain.
