Hey Matt;

We've done some biodiesel. I ran our Cummins Dodge work rig for a few
thousand miles on the stuff. 10% less power, smells a whole lot better. We
stopped because it gets cold up here and the stuff needs to be warmer both
for processing and running in your vehicle. If it gets below freezing,
you'll probably want to run a 50/50 blend of biodiesel with regular diesel.
The processing itself is a dangerous messy business, and I DON'T recommend
people cook up their own batches Ala Homepower magazine, etc. Either buy it
from a commercial outlet, or put enough money into it to build your own
small commercial processing plant. Its just not worth the risk to your
health or the environment to not do it right. Maybe somebody out there is
making a small sealed processing system that works and is safe, but the
home brew methods we used based on the book "From the Fryer to The Fuel
Tank" didn't take into account the cold problems nor were there any tips on
Solar powered processing (which is tough by the way).
Again, its messy and dangerous, and I wouldn't want my neighbor cooking any
next door to me.
We're currently putting together a consortium of folks in Taos to buy 1000
gals at a time from a commercial source. Not a retail outlet, but a private
club so we don't have to jump through as many federal hoops.
I'll be happy to share more specific info if the list is interested.
(anybody want to buy a slightly used solar heated fryer oil transport trailer?)
