Niagara Mohawk in New York has the same 10 ft rule. And most of the
net-metered jobs there have the meter mounted far away from the house. The
engineers agreed to allow a non-fusible disconnect, rated for the service
and mounted at the meter to substitute. In other words, this ac disconnect
locks out the whole house, not just the inverter backfed circuit. A 200 amp
disconnect costs $300 - $400, but sure beats time and material costs of
trenching.

Many thanks Bob for picking this up (again). This is a real problem..
Currently I'm struggling with PG&E and their stupid "VLD shall be within 10
ft of the
main service disco" requirement. Much useless cost and grief to the
customer,
when we are denied the use of a prefectlly functional sub panel and must
trench to the main.
