Kohler RES generators [RE-wrenches]

We recently replaced an 1800 RPM older model 8.5 with a newer version
3600 RPM unit. Client wanted to save money and the dealer was
offering a really good deal as they were tired of driving 4 hours each
way to service the older unit.

Nothing else changed on this total off grid summer home in the woods.
Same SW4024 inverter, same sixteen L-16 batteries, same Outback dual
power point controllers, and same two separate solar arrays.

BUT:

As soon as the generator was replaced we starting having generator
"error" lights on the inverter and the inverter would no longer
complete a full equalize charge. We checked everything and lowered
charging amps and generator capacity setpoints which helped some but
did not completely resolve the problem.

It is my belief that the low RPM Kohler had higher torque and spool up
response than the 3600 RPM replacement, and regardless of nameplate
rating, the newer unit was never able to meet the settings of the
older model.

Hope this helps -
