Fellow Wrenches,
This seems minor, but I lack a clear answer...
In December we replaced the 12V starting battery on a Kohler 8.5RMY
generator for a BU-only PP-SW5548/D system we maintain. The gennie is set to
exercise once every week or two. The 8.5 has simple controls, rather than
the gauges and all of the large units; I have measured 0 mA draw on standby
(off) mode. We have a 1.5W trickle module keeping this battery charged, that
we purchased from AEE.
The problem is that the client called me recently to report no starting. On
visit, the generator battery's voltage was too low. The charge module was
showing expected voltage and current.
I pulled the battery and hope that I can replace it under warranty at the
auto parts store where I purchased it. It could be a bad battery, but I
suspect not. The only other cause I can imagine is that the trickle module
either lacks a blocking diode or it has failed, and it is slowly draining
the battery at night.
Has anyone seen this? Any other ideas?
Thanks for any help,
Allan @+NRG
