Greetings all,
I was a little amazed that my 12 gauge circuit with 20 amp breaker (and 70
amp short with breaker not tripped) didn't bring more comments and/or
criticisms. A couple folks contacted me off-list to say I should be using
10 gauge wire in such DC circuits. Others commented that fuses are a beter
choice.
Let me say that the DC stereo the circuit powers draws no more than three
amps, so I believe the wire to be properly sized from a voltage drop
perspective. I will swap out the 20 amp breaker for a 10 (unless a five is
available). Also, as the home owner is now concerned about the DC circuits
(another circuit currently powers his hydronic heat circulating pumps), I
will back up the breakers with an R-class fuse and then simulate another
short circuit condition at the radio. BTW, I had spoke with someone at
Outback asking if they recommended protecting DC breakers with a fuse and
was told it was not necessary, but at this point I'm thinking it is a good
idea.
Any other thoughts appreciated -- Kurt Nelson
