Tom,

I have retrofitted pv on roofs with this product using
 3/8" hanger bolts - preferably stainless. I've
usually seen "Cal-Pac" roofing, as it's often called
in these parts, installed over shake. 10" hanger
bolts will be long enough to penetrate the rafter, a
couple inches of shake, the gap between "tile" and
shake, and leave enough machine thread to hang
mounting rails of strut on. If there is no other roof
product underneath, use shorter hanger bolts.

Strut can be suspended on the hanger bolts by using
double nuts and fender washers. Seal the penetrations
well with Sika-Flex or your favorite polyurethane
sealant. A washer pressed down and glued to the
surface with the caulking helps protect your
penetration spot.

Walk on the lower edges of the "tiles" where they are
supported by 1" x 2" firring strips. And if you ever
have the chance, try to talk the customer out of using
this product.
