Battery choice: one string or two? [RE-wrenches]

Hello this is a great thread, I am learning a lot.

If a person goes to 2 volt cells, could LED's be
attached to each cell, such that if a cell died, the
led would go out?  Thereby telling if a cell failed?  
Has anyone tried this?
