A one-point watering system can be used without it being automatic. 
The ones we've used in SEI workshops are not intended to be left 
under pressure. We use a pump sprayer (better than using it for 
pesticides...) and it takes half a minute to water a set of 8 L-16s, 
with no danger of overwatering.
