The problem your client is having with his battery bank wearing out 
prematurely, may have more do to with the type of battery than the float 
voltage. With a deep cycle wet lead acid- say like a golf cart or L-16 
-  over time the float current will increase, this can lead to too much 
float current. If the float voltage is not corrected (brought down) as the 
battery ages;  as the internal resistance drops -ohm' law say the float 
current will increase. This high float current may be what's causing the 
problem.
	 They make some batteries specifically for float service, but normal 
deep-cycle wet lead acid - antimony fortified or not the ideal.
	 If a new slew of battery backed- line commutating grid tied inverters do 
become available to the market soon, the old standard off-grid remote home 
batteries are not the ideal ones to use just because they have good bang 
for your buck, you'll want to look at a deep cycle battery made for float 
service applications like an lead calcium AGM. Hope this is useful.
