The problem your client is having with his battery bank wearing out
prematurely, may have more do to with the type of battery than the float
voltage. With a deep cycle wet lead acid- say like a golf cart or L-16
- over time the float current will increase, this can lead to too much
float current. If the float voltage is not corrected (brought down) as the
battery ages; as the internal resistance drops -ohm' law say the float
current will increase. This high float current may be what's causing the
problem.
They make some batteries specifically for float service, but normal
deep-cycle wet lead acid - antimony fortified or not the ideal.
If a new slew of battery backed- line commutating grid tied inverters do
become available to the market soon, the old standard off-grid remote home
batteries are not the ideal ones to use just because they have good bang
for your buck, you'll want to look at a deep cycle battery made for float
service applications like an lead calcium AGM. Hope this is useful.
