crisis intervention commentary [RE-wrenches]

You all might find this amusing...

I have a client in Brooklyn (New York City) who operates an indoor two
story shopping center with almost two million sq. ft. enclosed. It
includes the world's largest Sears store, a big Macys, hundreds of
smaller stores, a theater, an indoor 5 story parking garage, and an
attached marina.

Anyway, this mall was built in the 1970's when Con Edison did not have
enough grid capacity (and still does not!) to allow connection, so the
mall designers had to build a power plant on the roof. This power
plant has about 10 Megawatt capacity of low speed generators that run
on oil or natural gas depending on season, and requires a staff of 12
to provide 24 hr/day operation. They have waste heat exchangers on
the generator exhausts that heat hot water boilers for heating, and
absorption chillers for cooling (a true co-generation system).

I called the mall manager on Friday to ask if they were doing a land
office business, because I knew they would have the only stores in the
entire city with normal operations.

He said..... no, the police closed them down and asked them to turn
off their lights, because the rest of the entire city was black and
they did not want people driving and walking through the darken areas
of the city to get to this entire city block of light!!

We may want to think twice about advertising the advantage of solar
backup power for homes and businesses in a large city!!!
