Maybe this thread should move to the REbitching list?

I think (apologies to the republikans on the list) this is yet another
example of why privatization is no panacea. There are simply some (most)
things that should not be under the control of profit oriented, bean
counters... like human necessities such as health care, environmental
quality and energy to name a few. Putting a price on everything is not
possible or wise when it comes to human health and well being. Call it
socialism if you like, or simply appropriate control over corporate rule of
the world, but there is a place and need for public oversight of "profit is
god" rule of everything.

Deregulated utilities have very little motivation to make long term
improvements to the infrastructure as it will cost the shareholders their
short term god almighty profit. So loads increase and the infrastructure
becomes insufficient until something fails.

Renewable Energy? Do you really think some "economist" that is interested in
maximizing short term profits is going to factor in the long term
consequences of environmentally destructive, war producing use of fossil
fuels? Hardly... and that my friends is why we are seen as environmental
wackos... and why we constantly get asked what the "payback" is on renewable
energy.

P.S. I gave up on NPR. They have clearly also sold out to the bottom line.
