William,
I believe that the C-40 isn't actually protected by the 250 amp inverter
breaker, it's only used as a disconnect from the batteries. The fact that
there is a 30 amp input breaker has to do with the original array size at
time of order, not what the controller is capable of. One interesting result
of this wiring scheme is that, if you think you have cut power to the
inverter by turning off the main breaker, but have not shut off the
controller input, the inverter still has DC power in!
I usually run the controller output (never a C-40 these days) through
another breaker of equal value to the input side before connecting to the
battery.
