Batteries on Concrete [RE-wrenches]

Bill,

Though the slab temperature theory is probably true in some extreme
situations, it's my understanding that the original reason why batteries
were kept off concrete had more to do with the old hard rubber and similar
type battery "bodies".
Since they were prone to weeping a very small amount of fluid through the
case over time, there was a pathway for electrons to ground through the
saturated case if placed on the earth or on concrete.

This was explained to me by a really old guy who had been a Trojan dealer
since the 30's. He demonstrated by taking an old style battery (contemporary
back in the 60's) and measuring voltage between the pos terminal and the
ground on which it was placed, which showed about 6.2 volts! This might have
been peculiar to certain battery types, certainly not dry cells. New
automotive and industrial batteries are made of much better stuff and will
NOT loose charge if placed on concrete as long as they are dry (on the
outside). IMHO.

Subject: Batteries on Concrete [RE-wrenches]

Well, I got the question today about 'can I put these batteries on
concrete? (they are Concorde AGM's). Despite having heard for years that
there is something bad about putting batteries on concrete, I really had
no good answer for my customer. Anybody got the real skinny?

Best,
