Now you can do what the first guy should have made job #1. Help them make their
home as efficient as possible. Suggest a high efficiency refrigerator, front
loading washer, clothes line for drying clothes. How do they heat their water?
What kind of light bulbs do they use? Phantom loads?... you know the routine.

Our house gets about 99% of its yearly electricity off a 1.4 kW battery based
system, this one has 1.5 kW and is more efficient as no batteries so they should
be able to get that to easily cover at least 75% of their yearly loads. Once
again emphasizing efficiency is the most important thing, even before any RE
hardware is installed.
