BAD power factor?? [RE-wrenches]

Matt and Todd:
You can't multiply volts x amps in AC unless you have a sinusoidal current
that is perfectly in phase with voltage. CF lamps and computer power
supplies have very non-sinusoidal loads so their Volt-Amp consumption is
always more than their power consumption.
When you are looking at how hard the inverter is working, you have to look
at the Volt-Amp consumption of the loads, not the wattage. It is not
uncommon to have an off-grid inverter operating at 2500 V-A while only
producing 1800 Watts. The efficiency of the inverter is based on the V-A
level, not the Watts produced.
We have Mr. Tesla to thank for making the math more difficult--not Berkeley.
Bill.

Wrenches:
Todd Cory asked:
>These are "made in China" lamps purchased at Cost-Co R.
>Lamp 1 "13" watts: says 175 ma X 120 volts = 21 watts (a 60% increase
over stated lamp wattage)
>Lamp 2 "14" watts: says 200 ma X 120 volts = 24 watts (a 70% increase
over stated lamp wattage)
I ask....Ever been to Berkeley? The math's different there....OK,
enough of that! God I hate that part, necessary evil......Had to say it
since they are taking over the world.....Forget Iraq! (Sorry,
Michael.....Hope you didn't notice, but sure you did...)
It's a bad power factor associated directly with the quality of
components inside the lamp.....Or just bad math.....Or a printing
error.....Or.....
