One where the condenser and evaporator are in separate enclosures, with refrigerant lines (R-134 or similar) linking the two. Window units suffer from several inherent weaknesses--the hot parts and cold parts are too close together, and there's the gaping thermal hole created by the window and the separation of the two sides of the A/C. Split systems allow you to poke a 2-3" well-caulked hole into an otherwise sealed room and move the heat out. Very popular for small computer rooms stateside--and de rigeur in Europe and the orient. <http://www.sanyo.com/industrial/heat_air/air/> for example.
