Daryl,

The SB3048 can handle up to 24A of Isc (30A/1.25 for NEC) from what could be
thought of as a conventional 48V input (~4x17V=68Vmp @25C) at ambient
temperatures of up to 40degC without derating. Higher input voltages can be
used, but current must be reduced to maintain an equivalent maximum input
power. Technical bulletin #100210 available on our web site explains this in
more detail.

This means that at 120V input, input current would be need to be reduced
substantially. You would also want to look at the "Input Power Sources Other
Than PV" section of the operators manual regarding other criteria the power
source must meet. Something has to determine at what voltage the input would
operate at and our voltage sampling and difference MPPT method could work
well with a generator type input. It's hard to say for sure without knowing
it's exact electrical characteristics of the generator.

The problem however is that the inputs of multiple SB3048's cannot connect
in parallel as you describe so SB3048's cannot be used in the "single big
generator" system you are contemplating. In a PV installation each
controller must connect only to it's section of a large array.

In a large multi-controller system, units can be setup in a staged manner
controlling the full charge point as a function of net battery current via
an external shunt. Technical bulletin #100202 also available on our site
explains this in more detail. This multi-controller method works but is a
little messy to set up. Our new IPN based products will make
multi-controller systems integrate seamlessly together.
