Xantrex versus Sunny Boy [RE-wrenches]

Hi John and all,

As to Sunny Boy vs. the PVxx208 series. Until you get up past the 50
KW range (and maybe even quite a bit higher), I think it's SB all the
way. The isolation transformer losses and reliability issues and DC
wiring and modularity win it all the way for me despite the labor.
Exactly what point one switches from SB to PV as you go up I'm not
sure yet. I recently speced a 55 KW job and a 180 KW job and it was
clear to me on the 55 KW job that I would still go with SBs. But
past that I'd have to seriously consider the Xantrex again but even
then I could see using SBs even in the 100 KW or higher range. An
SMA employee (I won't hold him to it or mention names) did
acknowledge that perhaps the 569 SBs totalling 1.5MW was a bit much
but it does show you what you can do!

What are other designers thinking about how big a SB inverter bank
gets before it's time to go with a bigger inverter?

Cheers,

Jeff

And one slight correction: That's Insulated (not integrated) Gate
Bipolar Transistor - IGBT. Actually IGBTs have some advantages over
MOSFET's like switching speeds and less on-state resistance. And
John's right - no dumb questions - that's what the list is for - to
educate all of us. I've learned alot on this list.
