Power factor issues [RE-wrenches]

Hi Allan,
I use the Brand 20-1850 with the power factor read-out although it is not
the most used function. I like the ability to re-set a monetary value per
kilowatt used too on the Brand meter. For CFL's with a higher power factor I
have been getting commercial grade products at a lighting wholesaler in
Sparks NV. They contract out with the hotels, casinos, office buildings etc.
to keep them lit. In my educational display I use the 20-1850 to measure the
output of various types of AC CFL's and the commercial bulbs invariably draw
less than their rated watts. I haven't tried the PF read out though on the
bulbs. The spec sheets on the commercial bulbs will list the power factor.
TCP is one of the manufacturers of commercial CFL's I recommend.
Kill-a-Watt just came out with a new meter that measures power factor, I
think it was in the new Home Power.
The other item I regularly mention is the degree of Kelvin of the bulb. A
light rated at 27K puts off a yellow ambiance. The typical light we're all
use to getting in a cheap incandescent or CFL. At 50K the light quality is
close to daylight and very easy to work and read by, all in all a healthier
light to live with. The 64K rated bulbs are almost too white/blue to use for
regular activity. Try a variety of Kelvin rated bulbs at the same wattage
output and you'll see (pun intended) what I mean.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Chris Worcester
